Marshall Arisman was an illustrator, painter, educator, and storyteller. His illustrations elevated graphic art to the level of commentary and cultural criticism. His work has appeared on the covers of Time, U.S. News & World Report, The Nation, The Progressive, and The New York Times Book Review. Marshall’s editorial work has appeared in many national publications, including Esquire, Rolling Stone, Playboy, The New York Times, The Village Voice, and Businessweek. Articles featuring Marshall have appeared in Graphis, Communication Arts, and Juxtapoz Magazine. His paintings and prints are in the permanent collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the New York Historical Society, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Smithsonian Institution, the Guangdong Museum of Art, and the Telfair Museums, as well as in many private and corporate collections. Marshall is in the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame and the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame. At the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York, he was the chair of the MFA Illustration as Visual Essay program, which he founded in 1984. He was an SVA faculty member for 52 years.
